Finding a Rowing Club
Rowing requires water, boats, and coaching — which means you need a club. Here's how to find one.
Types of Programs
Scholastic / High School ProgramsMany high schools have rowing teams, even where it's not a school-sponsored sport. Often run by parent-booster organizations.
Community Rowing ClubsOpen to all ages. Many offer youth programs. Usually based at a boathouse on a river or lake.

What to Look For
- USRowing affiliated — ensures safety standards and coaching certifications
- Learn to Row programs — the right starting point for beginners
- On-water access — how often are athletes actually in boats vs. just on ergs?
- Equipment condition — well-maintained boats and ergs indicate a serious program
- Coaching quality — certified coaches who teach technique, not just volume
Rowing is a club sport. Unlike football or basketball, you won't find rowing at every school. But community rowing clubs exist in more places than you'd think — especially near rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.
